San Antonio has a diverse mix of road users — big rigs on the highways, motorcycles filtering through traffic, cyclists on popular routes, and pedestrians in busy areas like the River Walk, Pearl District, and near schools.
New drivers must learn to share the road responsibly and predictably. Many crashes involving motorcycles, trucks, and pedestrians happen because drivers simply didn’t see them or failed to yield properly.
Here’s how every San Antonio teen driver can stay safe while sharing the road:
1. Give trucks extra space Large trucks have huge blind spots on both sides and behind them. Never linger next to a truck — either pass quickly or drop back.
2. Watch carefully for motorcycles Motorcycles are smaller and harder to see. Always do a full mirror check and shoulder glance before changing lanes or turning.
3. Yield to pedestrians Especially in crosswalks, school zones, and busy areas. Texas law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks.
4. Be predictable Signal early, maintain consistent speed, and avoid sudden moves so others can anticipate what you’re going to do.
5. Check blind spots thoroughly This is especially important before lane changes on I-35 or Loop 410. A quick glance can prevent a serious collision.
6. Slow down and give space when passing cyclists Whenever possible, give cyclists at least three feet of space when passing. Slow down in areas with heavy bike traffic.
7. Stay extra alert in parking lots and neighborhoods Pedestrians and children can appear suddenly between cars or from driveways. Reduce speed and stay focused.
At Rhodes Driving Schools, instructors train teens to be courteous, aware, and defensive drivers who anticipate the actions of all road users — not just other cars. This awareness helps create safer roads for everyone in San Antonio.
Better drivers make safer communities.
