Texas summers are extremely hard on vehicles, especially for new teen drivers who may not recognize the warning signs of heat-related problems. High temperatures can quickly damage tires, batteries, cooling systems, and air conditioning — particularly when stuck in stop-and-go traffic on I-35 or Loop 410.
Many breakdowns and dangerous situations can be prevented with simple preparation and awareness.
Here are essential summer car care habits every San Antonio teen driver should know:
1. Check tire pressure regularly Heat increases tire pressure, but underinflated tires are still common and dangerous. Check pressure at least once a month, including the spare.
2. Test the air conditioning early Don’t wait until the temperature hits 100°F+ to discover your AC isn’t working well. Get it checked before summer hits hard.
3. Inspect coolant and radiator hoses Low coolant or old, cracked hoses can lead to overheating. Make sure fluid levels are correct and hoses are in good condition.
4. Keep an emergency kit in the car Include water, snacks, a phone charger, flashlight, basic tools, and a first-aid kit — especially important during long summer drives.
5. Never leave people or pets in a parked car Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise to dangerous levels in just minutes, even with windows cracked.
6. Watch the temperature gauge If the gauge starts climbing, turn off the AC, turn on the heater (to pull heat away from the engine), and safely pull over if needed.
7. Know what to do if the car overheats Pull over safely, turn off the engine, and wait for it to cool before adding coolant. Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
At Rhodes Driving Schools, instructors include vehicle familiarization and basic maintenance awareness during lessons so teens learn to spot problems early and stay safe on the road.
