3. Watch constantly for pedestrians. People step out from between parked cars, especially near store entrances, food courts, and school drop-off areas. Scan left, right, and between vehicles as you move.
4. Use your turn signals even in the parking lot. Signaling makes your intentions clear to other drivers and reduces surprise movements. It is a simple habit that prevents many low-speed collisions.
5. Choose the easier space when possible. Parking farther away often gives you more room to maneuver, better visibility when leaving, and less stress. A short walk is better than a tight squeeze or a scraped bumper.
6. Exit a parking space slowly and deliberately. Ease out while checking mirrors and looking over your shoulder. Pause if another car is approaching in the aisle. Never shoot out of a space.
7. Stay alert in drive-thrus. Keep a safe following distance so you can stop if the car ahead brakes suddenly. Watch for vehicles cutting into the line and for pedestrians walking to and from the restaurant.
8. Avoid distractions completely. Looking at your phone while creeping through a lot or waiting in a drive-thru is one of the fastest ways to roll into another car. Keep your full attention on the movement around you.
9. Be extra careful near schools and during peak shopping hours. High-school parking lots at dismissal and busy retail lots on weekends or evenings have the highest mix of inexperienced drivers, parents, and pedestrians.
