Mastering Safe Merges and Lane Changes on San Antonio Freeways in 2026

Merging onto I-35, Loop 410, or US 281 is one of the biggest confidence killers for new San Antonio drivers. Fast traffic, short ramps, and aggressive drivers create high-pressure moments.

Here’s how to merge and change lanes safely and confidently:

  1. Get up to highway speed on the ramp whenever possible — don’t enter at 40 mph.
  2. Use your turn signal early and check mirrors plus the blind spot every single time.
  3. Look for a gap that gives you at least a three-second following distance.
  4. Avoid stopping at the end of the ramp unless traffic is completely stopped.
  5. Once on the freeway, stay in the right or center lane until you’re comfortable.
  6. Never force a merge by cutting someone off.
  7. If you miss your exit, continue to the next one — never stop or reverse.

At Rhodes Driving Schools we practice these exact merges on the freeways our students actually drive every day. Confidence comes from repetition with a patient instructor beside you.
