Legal Passing on Two-Lane Roads West of Loop 1604

City lessons spend hours on freeways. West of Loop 1604, the daily skill is different: a tractor or a cautious driver ahead on US 90 or an FM road, a broken yellow line, and a two-second window.

Passing is legal only when the line allows it, the oncoming lane is clear for the entire maneuver, and you can return without cutting off the vehicle you passed. If you cannot see far enough — crest, curve, or glare — you wait. A solid yellow line on your side means stay put, even if the driver behind you is impatient.

Count the gap. You need space to pull out, pass, and return with a margin. Night and dusk shrink that margin. Do not pass near intersections, railroad tracks, or hidden driveways. Do not pass on the shoulder.

If someone is passing you, hold a steady speed. Do not speed up to “help” or “punish.” Move right within your lane if there is room.

Rhodes Driving Schools west-side lessons treat passing as a taught skill, not a dare. Castroville and Helotes students can ask for two-lane practice instead of another loop around a parking lot they already know. Call (830) 931-6116 (Castroville) or (210) 695-8883 (Helotes).
