Unprotected left turns — those green lights without a green arrow — are one of the most stressful and crash-prone maneuvers for new drivers in San Antonio. Busy corridors such as Fredericksburg Road, Bandera Road, San Pedro Avenue, Military Drive, and sections of Loop 410 and Loop 1604 regularly require drivers to judge gaps in oncoming traffic while also watching for pedestrians and vehicles that may run the light.

Many new drivers either hesitate too long and block the intersection or misjudge the speed of approaching cars and turn into a dangerous gap. Learning a consistent, patient method reduces both anxiety and risk.

Here is a clear step-by-step approach to unprotected left turns:

1. Position yourself correctly as you approach. Stay in the left-turn lane and signal early. Come to a complete stop behind the stop line or crosswalk if the light is red. When the light turns green, move forward only far enough to get a clear view of oncoming traffic while still leaving space for cross traffic if needed.
2. Keep your front wheels pointed straight while waiting. If your wheels are already turned left and you are rear-ended, the impact can push you directly into oncoming traffic. Keep the wheels straight until you actually begin the turn.
3. Yield to all oncoming vehicles and pedestrians. You must wait for a safe gap in traffic from the opposite direction. Also watch for pedestrians in the crosswalk you will turn into. Oncoming traffic has the right-of-way on a circular green light.
4. Watch for vehicles running the yellow or red light. It is common for drivers to accelerate through the end of a yellow light. Make sure the intersection is clear of late vehicles before you commit to the turn.
5. Do not enter the intersection on a yellow light if you are still waiting. If the light turns yellow while you are waiting for a gap, stay put. Entering on yellow and then getting stuck is both illegal in many situations and dangerous.
6. Make the turn smoothly once you have a safe gap. Turn the wheel steadily, look through the turn toward your target lane, and accelerate moderately once you have cleared the opposing lanes. Avoid wide, slow turns that leave you exposed longer than necessary.
7. When in doubt, wait for the next cycle. There is no prize for forcing a tight gap. Waiting for a fresh green light or a clearer opening is almost always the safer choice, especially for newer drivers.
8. Be extra cautious at multi-lane intersections. Oncoming traffic may have more than one lane. A car in the far lane can be harder to see and may be traveling faster. Make sure every lane is clear before you go.
