A little preparation goes a long way toward reducing anxiety.
- Bring the right documents: In Texas, you must have your valid Texas learner’s permit (instruction permit) with you for every lesson. A photo on your phone is not accepted — bring the physical card. If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian may need to sign a form.
- What to wear: Choose comfortable clothing that allows free movement. Most importantly, wear closed-toe shoes with a back strap (sneakers are ideal). Avoid flip-flops, sandals, high heels, or bulky boots that can slip off the pedals.
- Arrive rested and focused: Get a good night’s sleep, eat a light meal, and stay hydrated. Avoid caffeine overload if it makes you jittery.
- Mental prep: Remind yourself that everyone starts as a beginner. Your instructor is there to guide you safely — mistakes are expected and part of learning.
- Ask about any previous driving experience (even if it’s just riding a bike or go-karting)
- Discuss your goals — whether you’re preparing for the DPS driving test, building confidence as a teen, or learning later in life as an adult
- Explain how the dual-control training vehicle works (they have a brake pedal on their side for safety)
- Adjusting your seat, mirrors, and steering wheel for proper posture
- Locating and understanding all controls: gas pedal, brake, turn signals, headlights, wipers, horn, and gear shifter (most of our vehicles are automatic)
- Checking blind spots and proper hand position on the wheel (9 and 3 o’clock is still the gold standard)
- Starting and stopping smoothly in a quiet parking lot or low-traffic residential area near one of our four San Antonio locations (Helotes, Ellison, Eckhert, or Southwest High School area)
- Practicing gentle acceleration and braking
- Basic turns and steering control
- Maintaining lane position
- Coming to complete stops at stop signs
